The original tailgate pad sets a new paradigm for performance.
Our original pickup pad was introduced to the bike world in 2005, and we’ve been steadily refining it for almost 20 years. Though the problem of transporting bikes to trailheads without damage has long been solved, we’ve strived to update our pickup pads in tandem with the evolution of trucks. Now, we’re introducing our Universal Pickup Pad, designed to fit all of today’s pickup tailgates, regardless of whether they’re deep, curved, or larger than standard truck models. Boasting improved protection, elevated features, and a modern, clean aesthetic, this padded tailgate protector is made of a rugged, recycled 900D polyester with UV coating and features EVA foam panels (which borrow from our surf traction designs, highlighting our roots in surfing) for convenient spacing of bike frames. Each panel has its own adjustable bike-anchor strap, and the pad attaches to the tailgate via four cinch straps with spring-loaded cam locks. A handy removable cover for tailgate handles and rear-view cameras now has its own storage pocket, and the hook closure now doubles as a convenient bottle opener. The pad itself is cable-lock compatible, while the screen-printed logo is reflective for enhanced nighttime visibility. What’s more, the Universal Pickup Pad is compatible with truck shells and tonneau covers, both of which can be locked while the tailgate pad is still attached. The small size secures five bikes, while the large size accommodates up to seven steeds. Welcome to the gold standard in tailgate protection.

WOULD be awesome, but has a fatal flaw. Returning it
This tailgate pad has some nice features, like well-designed fork padding and a fully detachable handle/camera cutout. But one major flaw ruins it: the velcro straps. They're hard to feed through — requiring bare hands instead of gloves — and worse, the material choice for the daisy chain loops is terrible. The velcro shreds them every time you tighten the straps. After just a couple weeks, mine are already fraying and I doubt they'd last through the summer. I expect better from Dakine. This pad clearly wasn't properly tested. Now I’m stuck dealing with a return. Dakine should recall this model before these straps fail and peoples' bikes start getting damaged.
AMAZING
This is ABSOLUTELY worth the extra money! I have had many Dakine products and this one is VERY well made! I have a Tundra and this fix perfectly across the back with 5 Trek Mountain Bikes locked in. We drove from San Diego to the Canada border and everything was nice and tight and no scratches or dents in my truck. Highly recommend!
Excellent tailgate pad
Love how easy this was to set up. The bikes are secure and easy to get on and off. Would definitely recommend!
I like it
This is the 1st pickup pad I have ever had and I went with the universal pad for the extra padding vs. the standard pad. It fits well and is super easy to put on and take off in a hurry. I like that I can leave it on and flip the top to the inside and use my roll cover as normal. I only have 3 negatives. When I flip the pad to the inside I have to be careful to not shut the straps in the tailgate. When I flip the pad back for use, it is a bit of a chore to get it back in the correct position. Lastly the hold down straps are a pain to have to thread through the loops every time I strap a bike in. All of these are minor and will get better the more I use it. I will be making a different 2-piece strap that stay in the loops and lay over the frame. I do like it over all and the fact that I can carry all of the bikes and hook up to my camper is awesome.
